4.5/5 – Excellent College Comedy
A large cast of characters get into interesting college hijinks. The story focuses on Joyce, a conservative Christian who struggles with the decidedly un-Christian college environment. Dumbing of Age is currently running a kickstarter for their excellently named second book collection “I beg you, don’t cast your body into the cragged shame pits of the lustwolves” which is here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/326540223/dumbing-of-age-the-second-book-collection?ref=card
What’s Awesome About It?
Slice of life isn’t usually my cup of tea, but I really like Dumbing of Age. The characters are all excellently written, managing to be constantly entertaining while still seeming like very real people, for the most part. The art is cartoony but fits very well. Overall, this comic just manages to be really engaging and I find myself coming back eagerly every day (by the way did I mention it updates 5 days a week normally and now 6 because of a stretch goal, with a chance for truly daily updates if the kickstarter does even better).
The characters have really grown on me. The characters have all had appearances in some form in Willis’s other comics such as Roomies, Joyce and Walky, and the like. Personally, Dumbing of Age is the only of Willis’s comics that I’ve read and I had absolutely no trouble picking it up. The writing is excellent, and the characters come across quite well. If you’re even sort of interested in slice of life stories, I recommend Dumbing of Age.
