Manly Guys Doing Manly Things

4/5- Great comic for fans of games and action movies

Manly Guys Doing Manly Things follows the exploits of a time traveling action hero named The Commander who runs a temp agency for action movie and video game stars after their respective franchise has finished.  There also is an assistant named Jared who wears a beanie and has a pet Gyarados (from Pokémon) named Mr. Fish and it updates relatively consistently on Mondays.

What Makes It Awesome

Manly Guys is definitely a fantastic webcomic for a myriad of reasons.  To start, the art in the comic is pretty consistently amazing.  The comic is also a sort of love letter to anyone who was a fan of 80’s action movies or 90’s and modern video games such as Resident Evil, Duke Nukem, God of War, Pokémon, or Dragon Age.  By the same reasoning, however, some of the jokes that the comic relies on wouldn’t convey to people who aren’t familiar with all of these references, especially some of the modern video game ones.  That being said, the comic still has a relatively consistent joke output.

My Thoughts

I personally have always loved this comic for a few reasons.  Like I mentioned above, the art is pretty consistently top notch and the jokes are great.  I also have a particular bias towards the comic because I am familiar with and a fan of most of the video games and movies that frequently get referenced in the comic, especially Dragon Age, which is featured in several of the strips.  Overall, I’d highly recommend this comic to anyone who is a fan of action movies or video games especially, or just someone looking for a different kind of video game gag comic besides two guys on a couch.
