3.5/5 – Cute Diary Comics, lacks distinguishing features

Premise
An autobiographical/diary humor comic about a variety of wacky events. This is the comic of Monica Ray, a contestant on Strip Search, airing now at: http://www.penny-arcade.com/strip-search I’ll be reviewing all the webcomics by the Strip Search contestants over the next few weeks, and this is the third one I’m reviewing.

What’s Awesome About It?
The art is, for lack of a better word, cute, which works well for the mood of the comic. There are some mildly funny moments, and several more that are relatable or sweet. Still, the comic lacks particularly much depth – it’s mostly just a somewhat humorous retelling of whatever Monica happened to go on any given day. The comic has a lot of heart but not much substance. Fans of diary comics will probably like this one, but there’s not a whole lot to recommend if that’s not the kind of thing you enjoy reading – this isn’t going to get you to like diary comics.

My Thoughts
At first I thought this comic was pretty boring and typical, but there are some good, genuine moments in the comic that put it above what might be considered your “average” diary comic, but at the end of the day, it’s still a diary comic. There’s not really enough comedy to survive on comedy and there’s no particular story or characters that are particularly developed (as its just people Monica happened to know/encounter). As such, it languishes in a spot without a real focus, and gets by on heart alone. Now heart can get you decently far, but at the end of the day, I feel you need just a bit more if you want to rise above “fairly enjoyable” to “really good”.
