Premise
Captain Estar is a down on her luck bounty hunter living a life she hates. After a seemingly lucky break, she runs into an old friend she doesn’t want to see and finds that her latest bounty claims to have found heaven somewhere in space… This is something of an old comic (but no less good!), and is complete. It’s made by Winston Rowntree, the creator of the excellent ongoing comic subnormality, which you can find here: http://www.viruscomix.com/subnormality.html

What’s Awesome About It?
This comic is definitely unique. The art is black and white and just stuffed with all manner of detail that really makes the setting and characters come alive and hint at a depth that you just don’t see that often in web comics. The storyline is somewhat weird at times, but it’s an interesting kind of weird, and the story really explores the characters, who are all intriguing and written in a way that makes them come alive as real people.

The comic can be a bit dense at times, but there’s a profundity to the dialog, something that’s quite difficult to pull off well, but that’s executed quite masterfully here.

My Thoughts
Captain Estar Goes to Heaven definitely has a more “Old School Indie Comics” vibe than you usually see these days, but it’s refreshing in its uniqueness and the mix of the mundane and the mysterious in the plot. If you want to read a great tale for about an hour that comes to a full conclusion, then you should check this out, especially if you’re looking for something a bit different than the standard fare. And if you like it (or just in general, because it’s also good), give Subnormality a read for more great comics in a similar style.

I love Winston Rowntree’s stuff in general, but “Captain Estar” really stood out. I’m hoping there’ll be more sometime– the setting is too good to leave unexplored.

The ending just left me breathless and depressed for three whole days. I like the artist’s work. Stands out like a pink plastic bottle on the beach.
